The scoop is 9 g. The amino acids are 5 g. The other 4 g is flavouring, two acids, salt and two sweeteners — a little under half of what you are scooping.

And the eight acids sit in one blend. No individual amounts. With amino acids that omission bites harder than usual, because the ratios are what the research literature is about; leucine in particular is studied at specific doses, and you cannot tell how much of this 5 g is leucine.

Worth noting that this is a choice rather than an industry constraint: the same company’s Advanced Memory Formula quantifies every single active ingredient.

Eight, not nine

Now count them.

That is eight, and it is not an arbitrary eight. It is the classical set.

From a review in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition:

In healthy adult humans, eight amino acids (isoleucine, leucine, lysine, methionine, phenylalanine, threonine, tryptophan, and valine) were shown classically by nitrogen balance studies to be indispensable. Subsequent studies classifying histidine as indispensable are reviewed in this article.

So the product’s list is the pre-histidine list. Histidine is the ninth, and it is not here.

How much does that matter

Less than the sentence above makes it sound, and this page is not going to inflate it.

Histidine is present in ordinary dietary protein. Nobody eating a mixed diet becomes histidine-deficient because a supplement omitted it.

The point is about the claim, not the risk. A product sold on the premise that it delivers what your body needs to build protein — at 99% efficiency — is delivering eight of the nine. If efficiency is the pitch, completeness is the least you would expect.

The 99% chart

Everything not in that first column is labelled “converted to sugars or fats.”

The chart carries no citation. No study, no method, no reference anywhere on the page it appears on. That alone is the finding, and it is the one to carry away.

For context on what the recognised measures look like: protein quality is scored internationally by PDCAAS and DIAAS, and a 2017 study in the British Journal of Nutrition measuring both reported that the standardised ileal digestibility of most indispensable amino acids in whey protein isolate and whey protein concentrate was significantly greater than in soya protein isolate, soya flour and wheat.

That is the opposite direction from a chart that files whey in with soy and nuts at 18%.

To be fair about what that does and does not prove: it does not establish that the chart’s numbers are wrong. It establishes that they are unsourced, that they do not come from either framework the field actually uses, and that at least one of their groupings runs against measured data. An uncited chart is not evidence, whichever way it points.

What this leaves you with

A flavoured free-amino-acid drink at roughly $1.11 a day, supplying 5 g of amino acids per 9 g scoop, in undisclosed ratios, containing eight of the nine indispensable amino acids, sold on a chart with no source.

None of that makes it useless. Free-form amino acids are a real category and some people want exactly that. It does mean that if the 99% figure is why you are reaching for it, you are buying a number the seller has not shown its working for.

If you have kidney disease or are on a protein-restricted diet, do not add an amino acid supplement without asking your doctor first.

Modern scoring patterns treat histidine as one of the indispensable amino acids. This product contains the earlier eight, not the nine.

Does the missing histidine matter?

It depends entirely on what you are asking the product to do, and this page will not overstate it. Histidine is present in ordinary dietary protein, so somebody eating a mixed diet is not going without it because a supplement omits it. The point is narrower and it is about the claim rather than the risk: a product sold on the premise that it supplies what your body needs to build protein, at 99% efficiency, is supplying eight of the nine. If the pitch were about efficiency you would expect the set to be complete.

Is the 99% Protein Utilization Chart accurate?

We cannot tell you, because the product page does not say where the numbers come from. The chart places Advanced Amino Powder at 99%, whole eggs at 48%, meat, poultry and fish at 32%, whey, soy and nuts at 18% and BCAAs at 1%, with the remainder in each case labelled converted to sugars or fats. Those figures do not correspond to PDCAAS or DIAAS, which are the two internationally used frameworks for scoring protein quality. Is this a proprietary blend?

Yes, and it is worth noting because the same company does not always do this. Advanced Memory Formula, from Advanced Bionutritionals, quantifies every active ingredient on its panel. Here, eight amino acids are pooled into a single 5 g figure. That means you cannot tell how much leucine you are getting, which matters more than usual with amino acids because the ratios are the entire subject of the research literature.

How does it compare with whey protein?

On the label rather than on the chart: a 9 g scoop supplies 5 g of free amino acids at 25 calories. A typical whey serving supplies substantially more protein by weight at a higher calorie cost. Whether free amino acids are preferable to intact protein is a real question with a real literature, and it is not one an uncited bar chart settles. What this page can tell you is what is in the tub and what the label does and does not disclose.

What does it cost?

The company lists it from $33.25 per container at the multi-container price, for 30 servings, so roughly $1.11 a day. Per gram of amino acid that is a premium price, which is defensible if free-form amino acids are what you specifically want and less defensible if you are paying it because of the 99% figure.

Should I buy it?

If you want free-form essential amino acids in a flavoured drink and you are comfortable not knowing the individual amounts, this is one of those, at a premium price, missing histidine. If you are buying because of the Protein Utilization Chart, you are buying on the strength of numbers the seller has not sourced, and that is the part of this review worth carrying away. Anyone with kidney disease or on a protein-restricted diet should not add an amino acid supplement without medical advice.
