Search “how to boost NAD+” and you will hit a wall of marketing: injectable drips, skin patches, nasal sprays and pricey powders, often fronted by influencers promising more energy and a slower clock. Underneath the noise is a genuinely interesting molecule and a genuinely honest answer, which is that some of this is well-supported and a lot of it is hope dressed up as science. Here is the balanced version.

What NAD+ actually is

NAD+ (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide) is a coenzyme found in every one of your cells. Its main job is to carry electrons through the reactions that convert food into usable energy, which is why it sits at the centre of metabolism. It is also consumed by a set of repair and signalling enzymes, including the sirtuins and PARPs that have become famous in aging research. Because it is both a fuel-handling molecule and a signalling currency, NAD+ touches an enormous range of cellular processes, as reviewed in detail by Rajman and colleagues in Cell Metabolism.

The reason it gets so much attention is that NAD+ levels tend to fall with age. That same review describes a steady age-related decline in NAD+ across many animal tissues and some human ones, driven by a mix of rising consumption and reduced synthesis. Restoring NAD+ in aged mice can improve various markers of metabolic health, which is what launched the field. The crucial caveat, and the one the hype skips, is that most of the exciting anti-aging results are in animals, and mice are not people.

The lifestyle levers with real support

Before any supplement, the everyday habits that support healthy NAD+ metabolism are the same ones that support metabolic health generally.

Exercise is the standout. Physical activity increases demand for NAD+ and, over time, is associated with better NAD+ metabolism and mitochondrial function. It is the single lever with the deepest independent evidence base for the outcomes people actually want, such as energy and healthy aging.

Not chronically overeating matters too. NAD+ rises and falls with food intake, and persistent caloric excess is tied to metabolic dysfunction. Periods of fasting or simply avoiding overnutrition are consistent with the way NAD+ biology responds to energy stress, though claims that a specific fasting protocol dramatically raises human NAD+ outrun the direct evidence.

Adequate sleep is worth protecting because NAD+ and its related enzymes follow a daily rhythm tied to the sleep-wake cycle, part of the circadian machinery that coordinates when cells burn and store energy. Chronic sleep disruption is broadly bad for metabolism, so good sleep is a reasonable, low-risk part of the picture, and unlike a supplement it costs nothing.

Limiting UV and inflammatory damage rounds it out. Sun damage and chronic inflammation activate NAD+-consuming repair enzymes, which can drain the pool. Sun protection and generally lowering inflammatory load are sensible on their own merits and align with keeping NAD+ demand from spiking unnecessarily.

The precursors: niacin, nicotinamide, NR and NMN

You cannot usefully swallow NAD+ itself. Instead, supplements provide precursors, the building blocks your cells convert toward NAD+. These include plain niacin, nicotinamide, nicotinamide riboside (NR) and nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN).

The best human evidence is that these precursors can raise NAD+ markers in your blood. In a placebo-controlled crossover trial, Martens and colleagues in Nature Communications showed that six weeks of NR was well tolerated and roughly doubled a NAD+ marker in healthy middle-aged and older adults. That is a real, measurable biochemical effect.

Here is the honest catch: raising a blood marker is not the same as feeling younger or more energetic. A 2023 review in Science Advances examining what is really known about NR in humans concluded that while NR reliably elevates NAD+, the evidence for clear clinical benefits in healthy people remains limited, with trials that are mostly short, small, and focused on biomarkers rather than hard outcomes like stamina, disease risk or lifespan. In plain terms: the plumbing changes, but the promised whole-body payoff has not been demonstrated. That does not make the precursors useless; it makes them unproven, which is a different and more honest thing than the marketing implies.

NAD vs NMN, and NR vs NMN

Two questions come up constantly. First, NAD vs NMN: NAD+ is the active coenzyme, while NMN is one precursor to it, so it is not really a contest, it is a raw-material choice. Second, and more useful, NR vs NMN. Both raise NAD+ markers. NR simply has the longer, better-documented human safety record. NMN has passionate advocates but a messier regulatory story in the US, where the FDA excluded it from the supplement category in 2022 and then reversed that position in 2025. Where the hype clearly outruns the science

This is where marketing gets ahead of the data. IV NAD+ drips are expensive and sold heavily by wellness clinics, yet published evidence for anti-aging or energy benefits in healthy people is very thin, and fast infusions can cause unpleasant chest tightness and nausea. Patches and nasal sprays face an even steeper problem: NAD+ is a large, unstable molecule, and there is little published evidence that these delivery routes raise NAD+ meaningfully at all. When a product bypasses the trials and goes straight to testimonials, that is a signal to be skeptical, however confident the influencer.
