Sea moss arrived as a superfood with a specific promise attached: iodine, and therefore thyroid support.

There is exactly one US government monograph on it. Its first sentence settles more than it looks like it does.

What the NIH monograph says

The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development publishes LactMed, a toxicology database on drugs and supplements in breastfeeding. In February 2026 it published an entry for Sea Moss. It opens:

Sea moss or Irish moss (Chondrus crispus) is a type of red seaweed that is used as food and medicine, although no medicinal value has been proven.

Then, on what is in it:

It also contains numerous minerals, including iodine and some toxic heavy metals such as arsenic, lead, cadmium and mercury that come from the water where it was grown.

And the advice:

Sea moss should be avoided during breastfeeding unless the levels of iodine and heavy metals have been shown to be low enough to be safe.

Four named heavy metals. Zero proven benefits. That is the whole assessment, from the only body that has published one.

The iodine argument runs backwards

This is the part worth sitting with, because it is not “there’s no evidence.” It is that the evidence points the other way.

Iodine is a nutrient with a ceiling, not a ladder:

And here is the sentence that inverts the marketing, from StatPearls:

In iodine-sufficient individuals, iodine excess causes elevated thyroid-stimulating hormone levels, which inhibits thyroid hormone production and leads to hypothyroidism and goiter.

Hypothyroidism and goiter. The same outcomes iodine deficiency causes, arrived at from the opposite direction.

Most people in the United States are iodine-sufficient, because table salt is iodised. So the group most likely to buy sea moss for thyroid support is the group for whom extra iodine has a downside rather than an upside.

StatPearls also lists what iodine toxicity can lead to: “thyroiditis, hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, and thyroid papillary cancer.”

You cannot know the dose

The obvious reply is: fine, just don’t take too much.

You cannot, because nobody can tell you how much is in the jar.

A 2018 study in Food Chemistry measured iodine across three commercially harvested North Atlantic seaweeds. Content was species-specific and, for one species, “varied significantly between sampling locations and biomass sources.”

The size of the gap between species is the useful number. To meet an adult’s recommended daily intake you need:

  • 32 mg of dry Saccharina, or
  • 283 mg of dry Alaria, or
  • 2,149 mg of dry Palmaria

Same nutrient, same target, a 67-fold spread depending on which seaweed is in the bag.

None of those three is Chondrus crispus, and we are not claiming they are sea moss’s own numbers. What they show is the property of the category: seaweed iodine is set by species and by the water it grew in, which is exactly what the LactMed entry says about the heavy metals too. A fixed figure printed on a label is a statement about one batch that you did not buy.

It has actually happened

Not theoretical. A 2019 case report in Medicine describes a 70-year-old woman with no previous thyroid disease who developed:

  • tachycardia over 100 bpm
  • insomnia and anxiety
  • 6 kg of weight loss over three months

Three months after starting tablets containing kelp seaweed, taken as a slimming supplement.

Diagnosis: transient hyperthyroidism. Treatment: methimazole, 15 mg/day tapering to 5 mg/day over three months. Outcome: full recovery once the kelp was stopped.

One case is one case. It does not tell you how often this happens, and the authors do not claim it does. It does tell you the mechanism is real and that it reached a 70-year-old who was only trying to lose weight.

What this does not mean

It does not mean sea moss is proven dangerous at ordinary intakes. “No medicinal value has been proven” is a statement about the benefit side. The heavy metals are named as constituents that come from the growing water, not as a measured overdose in any particular product.

It does not mean iodine is bad. If you are genuinely deficient, iodine is exactly what you need. That argues for a measured dose of potassium iodide confirmed by a test, not for a plant whose content is set by the tide.

And it does not mean seaweed is not food. People have eaten it for centuries. Eating it as a food and taking concentrated daily capsules of it for a health claim that has never been demonstrated are different activities.

The nutrient it is sold on has a ceiling of about 1.1 mg a day, and going over it in an iodine-sufficient person causes the exact condition the product claims to help.

And the content varies with the species and the seawater, so the number on the label is not a dose.

Is sea moss good for your thyroid?

The claim rests on iodine, and iodine is a nutrient with a ceiling rather than a ladder. Your thyroid needs about 150 mcg a day as an adult. Above roughly 1.1 mg a day — about seven times that — StatPearls states intake 'may be harmful.' Crucially, in people who already get enough iodine, which describes most of the United States because table salt is iodised, 'iodine excess causes elevated thyroid-stimulating hormone levels, which inhibits thyroid hormone production and leads to hypothyroidism and goiter.' That is the same outcome iodine deficiency produces, reached from the other direction. So more iodine is not better thyroid support once you are replete, and sea moss gives you no way to know how much you are taking.

Are the heavy metals in sea moss a real risk or a scare?

They are a real and structural feature rather than a contamination accident, which is why the monograph mentions them at all. Seaweed absorbs minerals from the seawater around it, so what ends up in the plant reflects where it grew. That is the same mechanism that puts iodine in it. It means arsenic, lead, cadmium and mercury content is a property of the harvest, not of the brand, and it cannot be inferred from a label or a photograph of a clean-looking coastline. The practical consequence is that a product either has third-party testing showing the levels, or you do not know them. Most do not publish it.

How much iodine is actually in sea moss?

Nobody selling it can tell you reliably, and that is the honest answer. A 2018 study in Food Chemistry measured iodine across three commercially harvested North Atlantic seaweeds and found the content was species-specific and varied significantly between sampling locations and biomass sources. The scale of the difference between species is the striking part: the authors calculated that only 32 mg of dry Saccharina, or 283 mg of Alaria, or 2,149 mg of Palmaria meets an adult's recommended daily intake. That is a 67-fold spread between species for the same nutritional result. When the raw material varies that much, a fixed number on a supplement label is a claim about a batch you did not buy.

Has a seaweed supplement ever actually harmed anyone?

Yes, and it is documented in the medical literature rather than in anecdote. A 2019 case report in Medicine describes a 70-year-old woman with no previous thyroid disease who developed tachycardia over 100 bpm, insomnia, anxiety and six kilos of weight loss over three months. The trigger was tablets containing kelp seaweed, taken as a slimming supplement. She was diagnosed with transient hyperthyroidism, treated with methimazole on a tapering dose over three months, and recovered completely once the kelp tablets were stopped. One case does not establish a rate, and the authors present it as a case report rather than as evidence of frequency. It does establish that the mechanism is not theoretical.

Should I stop taking sea moss?

That is between you and your doctor, and this page is not going to make a medical decision for you from a monograph. What it can give you is the actual state of the evidence: no proven medicinal value according to the only government assessment of it, a nutrient with a ceiling as its main active constituent, four named heavy metals as a structural feature of how seaweed grows, and no reliable way to know the dose. If you have any thyroid condition, are pregnant, or are breastfeeding, this is worth raising at your next appointment rather than deciding alone — the monograph's own advice for breastfeeding is to avoid it unless levels have been shown to be safe.

Is there any iodine case for sea moss at all?

If you are genuinely iodine-deficient, iodine helps — but that argues for measured iodine, not for seaweed. Potassium iodide is the form used in the supplements that get this right, it comes in a stated microgram amount, and a deficiency is something a doctor can confirm rather than something you assume from a symptom list. Reaching for a plant whose content varies 67-fold between species, and which carries four heavy metals as part of the package, is a worse way to solve the same problem. The reasoning here is the same one we apply to any nutrient sold as a food rather than a dose, and it is why we go through why the dose on the label matters more than the ingredient list.
