Walk down any pharmacy aisle and biotin is everywhere: gummies, giant “hair, skin and nails” tablets, and shampoos, all promising thicker, faster-growing hair. It has become the default vitamin people reach for when they notice more strands in the shower drain. But the honest, evidence-based answer to “does biotin grow hair?” is far less exciting than the marketing suggests. For most people, it almost certainly does not.

What biotin actually is

Biotin, also known as vitamin B7, is a water-soluble B vitamin your body uses to help break down fats, carbohydrates, and proteins. It plays a genuine role in the health of hair, skin, and nails, which is exactly why it got its reputation as a beauty supplement. That part is true: without enough biotin, hair can suffer.

The leap that marketing makes, and that the evidence does not support, is the assumption that if a little biotin is essential, more must be better. That logic does not hold for a nutrient your body already has in sufficient supply. Because biotin is water-soluble, your body does not store large amounts of it. That distinction is the whole story. When researchers report a success, they are almost always describing someone whose biotin was genuinely low to begin with, and who was returned to normal by supplementation. That is not the same as boosting a healthy person past normal. There is a big difference between filling an empty tank and pouring gasoline over an already-full one. The marketing photos rarely make that difference clear, and neither do the labels.

It is also worth being honest about why so many people are convinced biotin “worked” for them. Hair grows slowly, and conditions like telogen effluvium recover on their own over several months. Someone who starts biotin during that natural recovery may credit the supplement for regrowth that would have happened anyway. Combine that with the placebo effect and the fact that people often start several changes at once, better sleep, less stress, a new diet, and it becomes easy to attribute progress to a pill that did nothing. Anecdotes are powerful, but they are not controlled trials.

Why most hair loss is not a biotin problem

If your hair is thinning, the odds are strong that biotin is not the answer, because the most common causes of hair loss have nothing to do with it:

  • Androgenetic alopecia (male- and female-pattern hair loss) is genetic and hormonal. Biotin does not treat it.
  • Telogen effluvium is temporary shedding triggered by stress, illness, surgery, crash dieting, or childbirth. It usually resolves once the trigger passes.
  • Thyroid disease can cause diffuse thinning, and the fix is treating the thyroid, not swallowing biotin.
  • Iron or vitamin D deficiency can contribute to hair loss and are worth checking with a blood test.

Each of these has its own proven approach. Reaching for a “hair vitamin” without knowing the cause means you may spend months on something useless while an actual, treatable condition goes unaddressed. The safety issue almost no one mentions

Here is the part that turns biotin from merely ineffective into potentially dangerous. High-dose biotin can seriously interfere with laboratory blood tests. Many common lab assays use a biotin-based method behind the scenes, and excess biotin in your bloodstream can throw off the results.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has issued a safety communication warning that biotin can cause falsely high or falsely low readings on a range of tests. Two examples stand out. Biotin can distort thyroid hormone tests, potentially making a normal thyroid look overactive and leading to unnecessary treatment. More alarmingly, it can interfere with troponin tests, the blood marker used to diagnose a heart attack, potentially masking a real cardiac event. The FDA has linked biotin interference to at least one reported death connected to a falsely low troponin result.

The practical takeaway: if you take biotin, tell your doctor and the lab before any blood work. Many clinicians ask patients to stop biotin for a few days before testing for exactly this reason.

The honest bottom line

Biotin is essential, but essential is not the same as helpful-in-extra-doses. For the average person with a normal diet and no confirmed deficiency, there is little good evidence that biotin supplements grow or thicken hair, and a real, FDA-flagged risk that megadoses will corrupt important medical tests.

If you are losing hair, the smarter move is not a bottle of 10,000-microgram gummies. It is a conversation with a doctor to find the actual cause, whether that is genetics, thyroid, iron, or something else, and to treat that.
