Ritual Multivitamin Review: The Trial Tested 2 Capsules, You Get 1

Key takeaways
- The trial Ritual cites (Osburn 2021, 94 women, 12 weeks) used two capsules a day containing 1,000 mcg DFE folate, 50 mg magnesium, 1 mg boron and 320 mg omega-3. Today's label is one capsule with 400 mcg DFE folate, 20 mg magnesium, 0.7 mg boron and 250 mg DHA.
- The same product page still lists the older amounts (1,000 mcg DFE folate, 30 mg magnesium, 330 mg DHA) in its 'Certificate of Traceability' section, which match the 2022 label on file with the NIH database.
- Vitamin D (2,000 IU), B12 (8 mcg) and iron (8 mg) are unchanged from the trial formula, so the trial's +43.7% vitamin D result is the finding most likely to carry over.
- Nine nutrients, not a full multivitamin: no calcium, iodine, vitamin C, vitamin A or zinc. Magnesium is 20 mg against an adult women's RDA of 310 to 320 mg.
- USP Verified and A+ with the BBB (74 complaints in three years). $33 a month on subscription, about $1.10 a day; the refund guarantee covers your first ritual.com order only.
Ritual is one of the few multivitamin brands that points to a randomized trial of its own product, and the trial is real: 94 women, 12 weeks, double-blind, placebo-controlled, published in 2021. The catch is in the methods section. The women in that trial took two capsules a day of a formula that is no longer what Ritual sells.
We read the Supplement Facts and the rest of Ritual’s product page, the trial and its full text, the label Ritual filed with the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database in 2022, and Ritual’s refund terms, all on 20 October 2026.
What Ritual’s women’s multivitamin is
The product is sold as Women’s Multivitamin 18+ and, in its FAQ, as Essential for Women 18+: “a clinical-backed multivitamin for women 18-49 formulated to help fill nutrient gaps in their diet.” It is a single capsule with an oil-filled beadlet inside, plus a mint tab in the bottle. The page groups its claims under brain health (DHA and B12), bone health (“calcium-helper nutrients” vitamin D, magnesium and boron), blood-building (iron and folate) and antioxidants (vitamin E).
It is a short list on purpose. There is no calcium, iodine, vitamin C, vitamin A, zinc or choline.
The label today, the label in 2022, and the trial
| Nutrient | Trial formula, 2 capsules (Osburn 2021) | NIH database label, 2 capsules (2022) | Ritual’s page today, 1 capsule | RDA, women 19 to 50 (NIH) |

| Omega-3 | 320 mg omega-3 | 330 mg omega-3 | 250 mg DHA | — |
| Vitamin K2 (MK-7) | 90 mcg | 90 mcg | 90 mcg | — |
Three things stand out.
The serving shrank. The trial and the 2022 label are two capsules. Today’s page says “Take one capsule per day” and “Get key nutrients in 1 pill daily”. Its Supplement Facts header reads “Serving Size: Two (1) Vegan Capsule”, which does not settle it either way, but the directions and the per-serving amounts both point to one capsule.
Three amounts fell. Folate went from 1,000 to 400 mcg DFE, magnesium from 30 mg on the 2022 label (and 50 mg in the trial) to 20 mg, and omega-3 from 330 mg to 250 mg of DHA. Vitamin D, vitamin E, B12, iron, boron and K2 match the 2022 label.
The page still shows the old numbers. Further down the same product page, the “Certificate of Traceability” lists doses per serving with supplier names, and there folate is 1,000 mcg DFE, magnesium 30 mg and omega-3 DHA 330 mg. Those match the 2022 label, not today’s Supplement Facts. If you are comparing, use the Supplement Facts.
Even the trial formula and the 2022 label are not identical: the trial’s magnesium (50 mg) and boron (1 mg) are higher than the 2022 label’s. The trial paper gives the composition it tested; it does not say how that relates to any retail version.
What the trial found
Osburn and colleagues at Auburn University randomized healthy women aged 21 to 40 to the multivitamin (43) or placebo (51) for 12 weeks. Ritual funded the study, and four of the eleven authors were Ritual employees; the paper says the funder was not involved in collecting or analysing the data.
- Vitamin D: blood levels rose 43.7% in the multivitamin group, with no change on placebo. The share of the multivitamin group below the paper’s 40 cut-off fell from 78% to 30%.
- Folate: serum folate rose on the multivitamin and not on placebo.
- Omega-3: red blood cell omega-3 rose in both groups, more on the multivitamin.
- Side effects: seven women on the multivitamin and six on placebo reported minor ones, such as an upset stomach.
The authors’ own limitation: “these data are limited to healthy females, and more research is needed to examine if MV can affect metabolic disturbances in individuals with micronutrient deficiencies.”
Of these results, vitamin D is the one most likely to carry over to today’s capsule, because the dose is unchanged at 2,000 IU. The folate and omega-3 results came from higher doses than today’s label lists. Ritual’s FAQ now says only that the product “was shown to increase Vitamin D and Omega-3 DHA levels in 12 weeks”.
What the trial does not cover
The trial measured nutrient levels in blood. It did not measure brain health, bone density, energy or any of the outcomes the “Supports” list names. Those are structure-and-function claims, carried with the standard FDA disclaimer. Ritual’s own FAQ is candid about feel: “While many people feel a difference, some don’t, and that’s okay.”
The nutrients it leaves out
A short formula is a choice, not a flaw, but it changes what you are buying. Measured against the NIH’s adult women’s figures:
- Iron: 8 mg against an RDA of 18 mg for women 19 to 50.
- Magnesium: 20 mg against 310 to 320 mg, about 6%, so it adds little.
- Iodine: none, against an RDA of 150 mcg (220 mcg in pregnancy).
- Calcium, vitamin C, vitamin A, zinc: none.
- Vitamin D: 2,000 IU, above the 600 IU RDA and below the 4,000 IU upper limit.
Ritual describes the product as filling “nutrient gaps”, so the right question is whether its nine match yours. If you are relying on one capsule as a complete multivitamin, it is not one.
Testing and complaints
- USP Verified: the USP’s own verified-products list includes “Ritual Essential for Women Multivitamin 18+”.
- Better Business Bureau: Ritual is accredited since 31 January 2019 and rated A+, with 74 complaints in the last three years and 33 in the last 12 months. Ritual answered 69 and resolved 5. The largest groups were product issues (23), service or repair (22) and delivery (13).
- FDA: a full-text search of FDA’s warning letter database for “Ritual” returned one keyword match, a 2024 letter to an unrelated company; searches for Ritual’s alternate name, Natals, returned none.
- FTC: we did not complete an FTC case search for this review.
Price and refunds
On 20 October 2026 the product page showed $33.00 for a 30-day supply on subscription, about $1.10 a day by our arithmetic, with a new-subscriber price of $26.40. Without membership it was “Buy once — $37.50 + $10.99 Shipping”, about $1.62 a day including shipping.
Ritual’s Happiness Guarantee says it will “refund the purchase price of your first order in full, with proof of purchase, within 30 days from the date of purchase from us via Ritual.com”, and that it “applies to your first purchase of a Ritual product”. Purchases from other retailers follow that retailer’s policy. The subscription terms add that “all fees for the Products are non-refundable” once you are past that first order, and the welcome offer notes that “Subscriptions automatically renew at the full retail price”.
Who it might suit
If you want 2,000 IU of vitamin D, B12, 8 mg of iron and some algae DHA in one capsule, from a third-party verified product, and you do not need calcium, iodine or a full set of vitamins, this does that job. If you are buying it because of the trial, know that the trial tested two capsules of an earlier, higher-dose formula, and that its most transferable finding is the vitamin D one.
We do not link to Ritual. Its refund applies only to a first order on its own site, and an Amazon box would send you to a seller whose returns Ritual does not handle. If raising vitamin D is your goal, a blood test before and after will tell you whether any product is doing that for you.
The bottom line
Ritual’s women’s multivitamin is well made and independently verified, and the company published a real trial. But the trial gave two capsules a day of a formula with two and a half times today’s folate and more magnesium and omega-3, while the product now sold is one capsule. The vitamin D finding (+43.7% in 12 weeks) is the one most likely to hold, because that dose has not changed. Read the Supplement Facts, not the traceability list further down the same page, and check which of the nine nutrients you actually need.
Frequently asked questions
Is Ritual's multivitamin clinically proven?
Ritual funded a randomized, double-blind trial in 94 healthy women aged 21 to 40 (Osburn 2021). After 12 weeks, blood vitamin D rose 43.7% in the multivitamin group with no change on placebo, serum folate rose, and red blood cell omega-3 rose more than on placebo. Four authors were Ritual employees. The trial gave two capsules a day of a formula with 1,000 mcg DFE folate, 50 mg magnesium and 320 mg omega-3; the product sold on 20 October 2026 is one capsule a day with 400 mcg DFE folate, 20 mg magnesium and 250 mg DHA. It measured blood levels, not brain, bone or energy outcomes.
What is in Ritual Essential for Women 18+?
The Supplement Facts on Ritual's product page on 20 October 2026 listed vitamin D 50 mcg (2,000 IU), vitamin E 6.7 mg, folate 400 mcg DFE as 6S-5-methyltetrahydrofolate, vitamin B12 8 mcg, iron 8 mg as ferrous bisglycinate, magnesium 20 mg, DHA 250 mg from microalgae, boron 0.7 mg and vitamin K2 90 mcg, with the direction 'Take one capsule per day'.
Did Ritual change its women's multivitamin formula?
The label filed in the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database in October 2022 listed a two-capsule serving with 1,000 mcg DFE folate, 30 mg magnesium and 330 mg omega-3. The Supplement Facts on Ritual's page on 20 October 2026 listed one capsule a day with 400 mcg DFE folate, 20 mg magnesium and 250 mg DHA. Ritual's page did not explain the change, and its traceability section still showed the 2022 amounts.
What does Ritual's multivitamin not contain?
It has no calcium, iodine, vitamin C, vitamin A, zinc or choline. Ritual describes it as formulated 'to help fill nutrient gaps' in women's diets. Whether that suits you depends on what you eat: the NIH lists an iodine RDA of 150 mcg for adult women and 220 mcg in pregnancy, and an iron RDA of 18 mg for women 19 to 50.
How much does Ritual cost and can I get a refund?
On 20 October 2026 the product page showed $33.00 for a 30-day supply on subscription, about $1.10 a day by our arithmetic, with a new-subscriber price of $26.40, and $37.50 plus $10.99 shipping to buy once without membership. Ritual's Happiness Guarantee refunds 'the purchase price of your first order in full' within 30 days of purchase on ritual.com; it covers your first purchase only and not orders from other retailers.
Does Ritual have complaints?
On 20 October 2026 the Better Business Bureau listed Ritual as accredited since 31 January 2019 with an A+ rating and 74 complaints in the last three years, 33 of them in the last 12 months.
