The “hair growth” supplement aisle is one of the most profitable corners of the wellness industry, and one of the least honest. Gummies, mega-dose “hair, skin and nails” tablets, and marine collagen powders all promise thicker, faster-growing hair. The uncomfortable reality is that for most people who already eat a reasonable diet, these products do very little. Supplements help your hair in one specific situation: when a genuine nutrient deficiency is driving your hair loss. Fix that, and hair can recover. Take extra of a nutrient you already have enough of, and you are mostly making expensive urine.

That single idea should reframe how you shop. The useful question is not “which hair vitamin is best?” but “am I actually deficient in anything, and is that why my hair is thinning?” The only way to answer it is a blood test, not a label.

Start here: test before you dose

A 2019 review in Dermatology and Therapy on the role of vitamins and minerals in hair loss reached a consistent conclusion: the evidence supports supplementation mainly in people who are deficient, and is weak or absent for dosing people whose levels are already normal (Almohanna et al., 2019). In other words, correcting a deficiency helps; “topping up” a full tank does not.

Testing first also protects you from a trap the mega-dose products ignore: for several nutrients, too much causes hair loss rather than curing it (more on that below). A basic panel, typically ferritin, vitamin D, thyroid function, and sometimes zinc, tells you whether a supplement can do anything at all.

Iron: the deficiency that really sheds hair

If there is one nutrient worth taking seriously, it is iron. Low iron stores, measured as ferritin, are a well-recognized contributor to hair shedding, particularly in menstruating women, who lose iron each month. When ferritin is low, correcting it can reduce shedding and support regrowth.

The critical caveat is that iron should only be supplemented when a test confirms you are low. Iron is not a nutrient to take “just in case.” Excess iron is harmful, and the body has no easy way to excrete it, which is why the NIH Office of Dietary Supplements treats iron overload as a real risk. Get ferritin checked, and if it is low, work with a doctor on dose and duration rather than grabbing the strongest tablet on the shelf.

Vitamin D deficiency has been linked to several forms of hair loss, and the vitamin D receptor plays a role in the hair follicle cycle. The evidence that correcting a deficiency regrows hair is less rock-solid than for iron, but because vitamin D deficiency is common, widely tested, and easy to fix, it is a sensible thing to check if you are shedding.

Protein: the nutrient people forget

Hair is built almost entirely from protein (specifically keratin), so it is no surprise that inadequate protein intake can push hair into a shedding phase. This is one of the reasons crash diets and very restrictive eating so often trigger hair loss a few months later.

The fix here is usually food, not a pill. For most people, eating enough total protein across the day matters far more than any specialized “hair” powder. This is also why the case for collagen is weaker than the marketing suggests, which we will come back to.

Zinc: only if you are low

Zinc is involved in hair follicle function, and genuine zinc deficiency can cause hair loss. But the same rule applies with even more force: zinc only helps if you are actually deficient, and excess zinc causes its own problems, including interfering with copper absorption. Zinc is worth testing if there is reason to suspect a shortfall, but it is not a supplement to take speculatively for hair.

Biotin: the most hyped, least useful

Biotin is the default “hair vitamin,” and it is largely undeserved. True biotin deficiency is uncommon in people who eat a normal diet, and there is little good evidence that extra biotin grows or thickens hair when you are not deficient. The NIH Office of Dietary Supplements lists an adequate intake of only about 30 micrograms a day for adults, an amount ordinary meals easily provide, yet many hair products contain 5,000 to 10,000 micrograms.

More importantly, biotin is not risk-free. High-dose biotin can seriously distort common blood tests. The FDA has warned that it can cause falsely high or falsely low results, including on thyroid hormone tests and the troponin test used to diagnose a heart attack (FDA safety communication). Collagen and marine formulas: weak evidence

Collagen powders and marine “hair” supplements sell well, but the evidence that they grow human hair is thin. Hair is made mostly of keratin, not collagen, and rigorous trials showing a collagen supplement regrows hair are lacking. If your diet already provides enough protein, a collagen scoop is unlikely to change anything on your scalp. It is not dangerous, just largely unproven for this purpose, and often expensive for what it delivers.

More is not better: the safety trap

The mega-dose “hair, skin and nails” model rests on a false premise, that flooding the body with nutrients must help. For some nutrients, the opposite is true. Excess vitamin A (retinol) is a recognized cause of hair loss, and too much selenium can trigger hair loss as part of selenium toxicity. Iron should never be taken without a test. Piling several high-dose formulas on top of each other can quietly push you into these harmful zones. If a product’s pitch is “extra-strength for hair,” treat that as a reason for caution, not confidence.

When it is not a supplement problem at all

Here is the part the supplement aisle will never tell you: most common hair loss is not caused by a missing nutrient and will not respond to any vitamin. Androgenetic alopecia (male- and female-pattern hair loss) is driven largely by genetics and hormones and is treated with therapies like minoxidil or finasteride, not gummies. Telogen effluvium, the widespread shedding that follows stress, illness, surgery, crash dieting, or childbirth, usually resolves once the trigger passes. Thyroid disease, both under- and overactive, can thin hair and improves when the thyroid is treated.

None of these are fixed by a hair vitamin. That is why a proper diagnosis is worth more than any supplement.
