Strip away the branding, though, and the science is calmer than the marketing. Electrolytes genuinely matter, but for most healthy people most of the time, an ordinary diet already covers them.
What electrolytes actually do
Electrolytes are minerals that carry an electrical charge when dissolved in body fluids: chiefly sodium, potassium, magnesium, chloride and calcium. They are not optional. They regulate the balance of fluid inside and outside your cells, and they let nerves fire and muscles contract, including your heart. A serious imbalance, such as very low sodium, can be dangerous. That real physiology is what the supplement industry borrows to sell everyday powders.
The catch is that “important” does not mean “supplement it.” Your body already keeps these minerals within tight ranges, and it gets them from food and drink continuously. The sodium catch with trendy mixes
The modern high-sodium powders deserve a specific caution. Their pitch is that older sports drinks were too low in sodium, so they load a serving with a lot of it: some contain around 1,000 mg of sodium per stick, a large share of a day’s intake. For a lean endurance athlete sweating heavily, that can be appropriate. For a sedentary person sipping one at their desk for “hydration,” it is simply a big dose of salt they did not need.
That matters most if you have high blood pressure, kidney disease, or have been advised to watch your sodium.
